Remote IT Support and Automation for New Zealand Small Businesses

TechPit Solutions is a remote IT team for small and medium-sized businesses across New Zealand. We look after help desk requests, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, device management, backups, cyber security and automation of the admin that slows your week down.

We work entirely remotely and agree support hours that suit your business day before we start. An accounting practice in Auckland, a consultancy in Wellington, a trades business in Christchurch and an exporter in Tauranga each have those hours and our response times set out in their service agreement.

Most New Zealand businesses are small, and few can justify a full-time IT person. We help you put practical security in place, look after personal information the way the Privacy Act 2020 expects, and connect tools such as Xero so data moves between systems without retyping.

Doing business in New Zealand

What growing businesses in New Zealand tell us they need

  • A country of small businesses

Most New Zealand firms employ only a handful of people, and many owners look after IT themselves between other jobs. Updates, backups and account clean-ups end up with whoever has time, which is often nobody.

  • No size threshold in the Privacy Act

Unlike Australia's privacy law, New Zealand's Privacy Act 2020 has no turnover threshold. A sole trader or a five-person practice has the same duty to protect personal information and notify serious breaches as a large organisation.

  • Distance between centres

With staff and customers spread from Auckland and Hamilton to Wellington, Christchurch and regional towns, getting a technician on site can mean a long drive or a flight across Cook Strait. Remote support takes the travel out of routine fixes.

  • Cloud accounting is the norm

Xero is widely used by New Zealand small businesses and their accountants, alongside separate tools for jobs, payroll and point of sale. The admin savings come from getting those systems to talk to each other, not from adding another one.

Typical engagements

What working together looks like in New Zealand

  • Privacy-ready Microsoft 365 setup

What a typical engagement looks like: we enforce MFA, apply retention and sharing settings, review who can reach customer and staff records, and set up audit logging so a suspected privacy breach can be assessed quickly.

  • Remote support across centres

For a business with an Auckland office and staff in Hamilton, Tauranga or the South Island, we manage laptops and phones remotely, schedule updates for quiet periods and give everyone one place to raise problems.

  • Xero and job management automation

We connect booking forms, job management software and Xero so quotes, jobs and invoices move through without double handling, with alerts when something stalls.

  • Consent-ready email and text marketing

We set up your email and SMS tools to capture consent, include sender details and unsubscribe links in every message, and sync opt-outs across lists, so your marketing is organised around the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act.

Data protection

Privacy and security rules in New Zealand

We implement the technical safeguards these rules expect. We don't provide legal advice or certify compliance.
  • Privacy Act 2020 and the information privacy principles

The Privacy Act 2020 applies to almost every business and organisation that handles personal information in New Zealand, whatever its size. Its information privacy principles set rules on collecting, using, disclosing and storing personal information: principle 5 requires reasonable security safeguards against loss, misuse and unauthorised access, and principle 12 limits sending personal information overseas. Since 1 May 2026, principle 3A also requires businesses, in most cases, to tell people when they collect their information from someone else. Every organisation must have a privacy officer.

How we help: We map where personal information is held across your apps and inboxes, apply role-based access and MFA, encrypt devices and backups, and remove data you no longer need to keep. Because our team works remotely from outside New Zealand, we document that access so it can be reflected in your privacy statement. Whether and how the Act applies to a particular decision is a question for your legal adviser.

  • Notifiable privacy breaches (Privacy Act 2020)

If a privacy breach has caused, or is likely to cause, serious harm to someone, the organisation must notify the Privacy Commissioner and the affected people as soon as practicable. Serious harm can include financial fraud, identity theft, emotional harm and blackmail, and the sensitivity of the information and the vulnerability of the people affected both count when assessing it.

How we help: We set up logging and alerting so incidents are spotted early, write a breach-response runbook with clear roles, and help gather the technical facts, such as what was accessed and when, that your team needs to decide whether a breach has to be notified.

  • Health Information Privacy Code 2020 (health providers)

Health agencies, including doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, optometrists and rest homes, follow the Health Information Privacy Code instead of the general privacy principles when handling health information about identifiable people. Its rules mirror the principles but are tailored to health information, including rule 5 on storing it securely.

How we help: For practices and clinics we set up unique logins, MFA, encrypted devices and secure email, restrict access to patient records by role, and keep audit logs and tested backups. We document what was configured so your privacy officer can use it; interpreting the Code stays with you and your advisers.

  • Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007 (email and text marketing)

Commercial emails and text messages may only be sent with the recipient's consent, whether express, inferred or deemed, and the sender must be able to prove that consent exists. Each message must accurately identify the sender and how to contact them, and include a free, working unsubscribe facility; unsubscribe requests must be honoured within five working days. The Department of Internal Affairs enforces the Act.

How we help: We configure your email marketing and SMS tools to record where and when each consent was given, add sender details and unsubscribe links to every template, and sync opt-outs across your CRM and mailing lists. Decisions on what counts as valid consent stay with you.

FAQ

Questions from businesses in New Zealand

How does a remote team work with the New Zealand working day?

New Zealand starts its day ahead of most of the world, so we agree support hours that suit your business day before we start. Those hours and our response times are set out in your service agreement, so you know when to expect help, and video calls are booked in New Zealand time.

Can our data stay in New Zealand?

Your data sits in your own tenants and cloud accounts. Microsoft Azure has a New Zealand North region and AWS has an Asia Pacific (New Zealand) region, both in Auckland, and we can configure services to use them where your licences and apps support it. Our team connects remotely from outside New Zealand, and we document that access so your privacy statement can describe it accurately.

What currency do you invoice in?

All our plans are priced and invoiced in US dollars (USD), including for New Zealand clients, and we can work with the payment methods your accounts team already uses.

Do we need a privacy officer?

Yes. The Privacy Act 2020 requires every organisation to have one, and in a small business it is often the owner or office manager. We do not take on that role, but we give your privacy officer the technical facts they need: where data is stored, who can reach it and what security is in place.

What happens if we have a privacy breach?

We contain the technical incident, preserve logs and work out what was affected, then hand those facts to you so you can decide whether the breach is likely to cause serious harm and must be notified to the Privacy Commissioner and the people affected.

Can you automate work around Xero?

Yes. We connect Xero with tools such as job management, CRM, booking and payment apps so quotes, invoices and customer details flow through without double entry, with alerts when something fails to sync. We work within the integrations and APIs that Xero and your other apps provide.

Will you send a technician to our office?

No. We have no New Zealand office, so all work is done remotely. For hardware swaps or cabling we coordinate with a local supplier you choose and handle the configuration side ourselves.
