# n8n

> n8n is a workflow automation platform that connects apps and services through a visual editor of linked steps called nodes, and it can be used as a hosted cloud service or self-hosted on your own server.

Also called: n8n.io, n8n workflow automation, n8n automation, self-hosted automation.

A workflow in n8n starts with a trigger node, such as a webhook, a schedule, or a new record in an app, followed by nodes that fetch, transform, and send data. It includes ready-made nodes for many common business tools, a generic HTTP request node for any API, and code nodes for custom logic. It also has nodes for working with AI models and building agents.

n8n is used for the same jobs as Zapier or Make: passing leads to a CRM, syncing records, sending notifications, and generating documents. Its distinguishing feature is the self-hosting option, which keeps workflow data on infrastructure the business controls. Its source code is publicly available under what the company calls a fair-code license, which is not the same as a standard open-source license.

Self-hosting means you are responsible for updates, backups, security, and uptime of the server, and stored credentials for every connected app must be protected. Complex workflows need error handling and documentation like any other software. Check the license terms if you plan to resell or embed it. We use n8n, among other tools, to build client automations, as users of the product with no affiliation to its maker.
