# Lead routing

> Lead routing is the process of automatically assigning each incoming lead to the right salesperson or team according to rules such as location, service type, lead source, or whose turn it is.

Also called: lead distribution, lead assignment, round-robin lead assignment, lead dispatching.

Leads arrive from forms, calls, chat, ads, and directories. A routing system collects them in one place, usually the CRM, checks for duplicates, and applies rules to choose an owner. Common methods are round robin, where leads are shared in turn, and rules based on territory, product, language, or deal size. The owner is notified immediately, and unanswered leads can be reassigned after a set time.

When leads land in a shared inbox, the quickest person takes the easy ones and the rest wait. Routing removes that uncertainty: every lead has a named owner straight away, the workload is shared fairly, and specialists receive the inquiries they are best placed to handle. It also produces a clean record of which sources and which people convert.

Routing rules are only as good as the data they read, so make sure forms capture the fields the rules depend on. Plan for vacations, sick days, and after-hours leads with a fallback owner. Keep rules simple enough to explain, and review them when the team changes. Check that existing customers go back to their current contact. We build lead capture and routing workflows inside the client's CRM.
