# Help desk

> A help desk is the single point of contact where staff report IT problems and requests, which are logged as tickets, prioritized, and then resolved or passed to a specialist.

Also called: IT help desk, service desk, IT helpdesk, IT support desk.

Staff reach the help desk by phone, email, chat, or a portal. Each request becomes a ticket with an owner, a priority, and a history. First-line technicians resolve common issues such as password resets, email problems, and printer faults, often by connecting remotely. Harder problems are escalated to second-line or third-line engineers, and the ticket stays open until the user confirms it is fixed.

A proper help desk means nobody in the business has to be the unofficial IT person. Problems are tracked instead of forgotten, urgent issues are handled first, and the ticket history shows patterns, such as one laptop that keeps failing or a recurring Wi-Fi fault. That history is also what lets a provider show whether it is meeting its service level agreement.

Ask who answers: trained technicians or a call-taking service that only logs messages. Check the hours of cover, the response targets, and whether you can see your own tickets and reports. A help desk that closes tickets quickly without fixing root causes looks good on paper only. We run a remote help desk for managed and on-demand IT clients.
